Your Personal Brand Image Has A Mouth, Too!

With over 100 million users on Twitter today, it makes sense that not everyone utilizes their accounts to promote their personal brand image positively. There are plenty of teenagers and celebrities that use Twitter to swear up a storm or make immature, joking comments. Ideally, Twitter should be an opportunity for people to optimize their image on the web and follow leaders in their industry, which may lead to a potential job opportunity in the future.

A Future you Can Swear By

Twitter has introduced a new Swear app that will serve to potentially decrease the amount of swearing per day on the site. An average of 430,000 swears each day are seen on Twitter, so this app  plays on the old tradition of putting money in an actual swear jar when a scandalous word found its way off the tip of your tongue by monitoring who the big swearers are. For each swear found on a person’s Twitter, it’s suggested they donate a certain amount of money, based on how bad the word is. These funds are then donated to two different charities, which will change monthly. Despite the money being put towards various good causes, the site hopes to discourage people from spewing their bad language on Twitter.

Swearing on a Regular Basis WILL Harm your Image

This may seem fairly obvious to many, but some people are rather accustomed to speaking their mind with whatever words they please and not thinking twice. Certainly there’s no need to distress over the occasional slip of the tongue, but the internet should be viewed as a swear-free domain. By posting each and every thought that comes to mind without editing and carefully thinking through what you want to say, your brand image will come off as lazy or uncaring. The main goal for your personal brand image is to come across as someone who cares about what he is promoting, and to be someone others can trust and care about as well.

Avoid the Temptation

Let’s face it: sometimes swearing is inevitable when you’re used to being able to use such language daily and some misfortune befalls upon you. When you’re having a particularly bad day or feel like ranting, phone a friend or write—literally, with pen and paper—out what you’re feeling rather than posting for the world to see. This way, you release all the negative energy and words that would be harmful to your personal brand image without allowing the entire internet realm to know what you’re dealing with. After a few calming breaths, look at some inspirational quotes and articles to give you the motivation you need to overcome whatever obstacle is giving you trouble. If necessary, take a step back from the Internet entirely to avoid an impulsive update that will only make your day that much worse. Your personal brand image will be much better off if you save the pennies for a different jar.
