Evan, true, your original resolution was a bit vague...but I really like that it will keep you constantly updating and re-evaluating. Cool idea.

Beth, really valid point there, something I didn't originally connect to goals...but you are so right.

I agree with you Ryan that it has to a very specif change with measurable result. Goals cannot be flaky mind you I was able to give soking from a resolution made lst year. It was snap decision not part of my regukar goal setting. Think it was the smell. It has to have clear steps such do not spend time with all the bad kids or buy some patches and gum and that sort of thing.

Great post, as with anything, if your new years resolution is broad and vague, its easy to lose sight of the little steps you need to take along the way to finally get to that end goal. Initially, my new years resolution was to make a new resolution every month, a little broad and vague huh?

I'll head back to the drawing board and tidy it up a bit so its a little more actionable.

I really like the measurability ideas that you have presented here. The most important thing I think is also the time management in the day-to-day that leads you to resolution success. That is something that I struggle with and is something others struggle with as well.

Thanks for your great ideas!!

Thanks for the kind words, Pete. Resolutions and goals are so easy to lose sight of, yet can be so pivotal when trying to make real progress. To be honest, I need to take my own advice and set a few more concrete goals myself.

Best of luck in 2010 to all the Brand-Yourself readers...please share your resolutions or goals here in the comments, I'd love to see them.

Ryan,

I LOVE this post! You created a system, that if followed, C.A.N.'T. fail. I also love the examples you gave, transforming vague resolutions into actionable ones that every savvy professional should take as their own.

Keep up the great posts. Cheers, and happy 2010!

- Pete Kistler
CEO, Brand-Yourself.com
