Ryan, I am in complete agreement that in most cases getting a job is all about your network, not your credentials on a piece of paper. In fact, I just wrote a similar post on this exact subject entitled <a href="http://resify.com/get-noticed/are-resumes-passe/ rel="nofollow">"Are Resumes Passe?" on my resume-focused blog.

It seems as if resumes are a formality but, as you mentioned, 20% of positions are still filled the old school way. So until hiring managers figure out another way to evaluate candidates, they're going to continue to be a necessary part of the job hunt.

The paper resume is on its way out! Your resume is your career obituary! I care about what the candidate is thinking about TODAY! As an Executive Career Coach who has successfully coach over 400 clients in the last four years, I have guided my clients to create a Visual Portfolio. We utilize www.visualcv.com where they can post a video interview, links to blogs, Twitter, Linked In, list recommendations, links to white papers, publications etc. If I were to be a hiring manager now I would be looking for the person on Linked In, Twitter to see what they are talking about today. If I were seeking a job I would be sending out a targeted letter to executives in my target organizations with a link to my online portfolio.
SAMPLE: http://www.visualcv.com/williamlthomas

Social Media gives us a 360 view of a person and if I were looking to hire talent...it would be a primary part of my strategy.

Fantastic point, Melissa. My first few months on Linkedin I went without a picture because of this notion...but quickly realized the game was just different online. Definitely a gray area.

Mr. Netzzz, I appreciate the reply. I'll just add that I do actually watch Jersey Shore and Teen Mom - so apparently I don't fit into any standard demographic! You might be right about resumes, who knows, will be interesting to see how it plays out.

OF COURSE RESUMES WILL BE AROUND IN 2020!! Come on guys, you're all wishful thinkers. Do you realize how terrible CNN is for a source in terms of technology. The same group of people asking Jason Calacanis about his demo iPad that he made up! Look at the trends. If you've worked at Cisco, IBM, Apple, Westinghouse, Motorola, Apress, any college, etc. you'd realize how relevant resumes are (sadly). Understand one thing, until technology advances then HR won't advance either. There are MAINFRAME COMPUTERS still taking care of the most important jobs and processes of these huge corporations that employ so many people today, and it's a majority of the people in the states. "Social media experts" like yourself are still such an incredibly small percentage of the working population today and it's going to take such a long time to really convince the general masses that resumes are obsolete. You need to look at the general public and if you really think that 80% of people that watch Jersey Shore or Teen Mom on MTV actually have a blog or a Twitter account then you're living in a fantasy world. Most people think Facebook is THE Internet, these people all have resumes and will continue to have resumes for many many years. Resumes are like business cards, and I was just at a start-up event today and I got over 10 business cards. Back in the day people thought that PDAs and the ability to exchange business cards over infrared would replace physical business cards, and they were incredibly WRONG. Also, let' be serious, any job fair takes resumes and if they don't take physical resumes on the spot they take them in digital form. Businesses like http://theresumator.com prove that resumes are going to be around for a long time, especially with clients like 37signals.

Great advice as usual, Meg. My takeaway from many comments here and elsewhere is that the resume will live on as a single tool in a toolkit of many - but it will not do the whole job itself.

One facet of this discussion that I didn't see mentioned is the fact that HR and resume writers still advocate that you not include a picture with your resume to avoid being discriminated against in the earliest stages of selecting candidates. Social media requires you to include your picture in order to have credibility online. With that, if the first look at a person's credentials is a format that has a picture, what could be the potential impact?

I don't have the answer, nor have I found/heard a really good one regarding it. But this question keeps popping up again and again for me...
