Nice post Keith - The primary criteria for choosing a mentor is your respect for their work/advice and their desire to see you succeed. One great benefit of having a mentor is that the can hold you accountable for commitments you make to yourself.

Excellent points, thanks. Your last piece of advise maybe the most important - make sure you are working with someone who will keep pushing you and moving forward. The minute you do not feel any advancement or further assistance, add someone new.

Absolutely Drew. The doors that maybe opened by a mentor are completely invaluable. Mentors will certainly put challenges in front of you to help you gain expertise and expand your knowledge base. Never loose touch with them!

Mentoring is critically important, and has been a driving factor in my personal career success.

Look for someone doing what you want to be doing, and then contact them.

Taking action to make the connection is really important, and then make it a point to remain in communication without being a pest.

Alsways bring something valuable to the conversation, rather than look for someone to guide you.

Consider your mentor to be an editor.

You do the work, write the project, start the company, etc., and your mentor fine tunes your process and your activity.

A couple of my mentors don't even realize that they're my mentors because I bring so much to the party that benefits them.

Also, don't worry about getting blown off. Successful people are busy.

Be careful about taking advice from someone who has never accomplished the dream.

And the second you find someone holding you back, or not encouraging you to improve, move on and find someone else.

Yes, mentors have a broader expertise than you so that you may leverage that knowledge going forward. Your support structure is absolutely different. A person will need both to succeed. The mentor will help strategically and the support structure will help on the emotional aspect. Both are important.

Thanks Dara - obviously I feel this is an important aspect for anyone to meet their goals in any aspect of life. Networking is always important, and through networking you may connect with new mentors to leverage. It is never ending but equally exciting.

Ooh just read your article more clearly a mentor is person that far outweighs your current skillset, they have done what you have not done and they can inspire to get to where you must. Some of the people suggested are just supportive not actual mentors.

Common people no comments what you have no mentors. The mentor is like having clear goals infact they help you guide you towards them. Keep up the social media HR. I have had a few myself got a sign up saying seeking a new mentor at the moment.

I think the importance of mentors can be overlooked, especially with my generation -- in college and right out of it. I looked to find mentors that were part of groups I belonged to; e.g. sat on a curriculum task force while in college. I learned a lot from the professors and other professionals in the group. Some of these folks became mentors. And, through them, I have been able to be part of other activities and also helped when I need a connection into the workplace. I still stay in touch with a former manager. It's invaluable the information I learned from them - everything from HR, employee situations and how to approach a new job search. I also enjoy watching successful people and learning from their reactions to situations and how well they articulate their views as a leader.
